Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across southern Minnesota with threats of large hail, damaging wind and heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, there is also a small threat for tornadoes in the area.

Heat indices are expected to be in the 90s across east central and southern Minnesota, with the peak index for Albert Lea expected to reach 98. People are advised to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks if participating in strenuous outdoor activity.

Heat indices are expected to reduce once the showers and thunderstorms move in.

The weather agency stated tree and structural damage from damaging winds and large hail are possible during the storm, and heavy rainfall in a short amount of time could lead to water issues in poor drainage and urban areas.
