Turnout for bike rodeo was great

The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (BikeMN) would like to thank the community of Albert Lea for inviting us to be a part of its first Family Bike Safety Rodeo in years. On Saturday, BikeMN helped lead bike rodeos in several communities across the state. We’re happy to report that Albert Lea’s was a huge success!
BikeMN believes that the success can be attributed to the joint efforts of community partners. SHIP (the Statewide Health Improvement Program), Pioneering Healthier Communities and the Albert Lea Vitality Project sponsored the rodeo. Involvement from the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce, superintendent of Albert Lea Area Schools, police, fire, the Mayo Clinic Health System, Martin’s Cycling & Fitness and the many enthusiastic volunteers showed an unprecedented commitment towards the value of safe, smart cycling for Albert Lea’s youth.
Despite dreary weather conditions, turnout was fantastic with all kids learning about helmet fit, bike safety checks, bicycle laws and how to “drive your bike.” A number of participants embraced the rain for the bicycling skills course, with several kids happily reporting, “I never get to ride in the rain. This is awesome!” Awesome, indeed.
Our helmets off to Albert Lea. Keep up the great work for safe, smart cycling in your community! We can’t wait to come back to see your first bike lane!
