Olson crowned state champion; 3 other Tigers place
Albert Lea sophomore Michael Olson earned the title of state champion over the weekend at the Minnesota state high school wrestling tournament.
Olson won the Class AA 106-pound division with four-consecutive wins, ending his season with a 51-3 record on top of etching his name in school history.
Olson won his first two matches quickly, ending both in the first period after a pinfall. He had his toughest test of the tournament in the semifinals where he came out on top of a hard fought 3-2 decision win. In the championship match, Olson turned on the burners, dominating to a 13-3 major decision win.
Senior Cameron Davis also wrestled in the championship match at 138 pounds, but came out on the losing end of the battle. Cameron Davis won his first two matches via a 14-3 major decision and a 8-4 decision, respectively. He also faced a tough bout in the semis, but ultimately came out on top in a 10-9 decision. Cameron Davis ran into a buzzsaw of an opponent in the championship match, losing in a 20-5 tech fall to finish as runner up with a season record of 46-8.
Freshman Logan Davis was the next highest finisher, coming in fourth place of the 113-pound weight class. Logan Davis won his opening round match by decision before coming up short in the quarterfinals. He then rattled off three-straight wins to earn himself a spot in the third-place match where he lost in a 9-5 decision. Logan Davis ends his season in fourth place with a record of 43-7.
Finally for the Tigers, freshman Nick Korman wrestled at 126 pounds where he finished in sixth place. Korman won his first match via tech fall before losing by pinfall in the quarterfinals. He then put together two consecutive wins before falling via a 6-2 decision in the third round of consolations, sending him to the fifth place match where he lost a 5-2 decision. Korman ends his season with a 38-17 record.
