Hanging on the wall across from the entryway to the office of new Albert Lea City Manager Chad Adams is a picture that speaks volumes.

At the top is the lone word, “Integrity,” on the bottom a motto that Adams says is important to him: “If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.”

It’s a motto Adams said he tries to live his life by and one he thinks will play a large factor in his new role as city manager.

Adams, 37, began full time in the position on Wednesday. He replaces former City Manager Jim Norman — the city’s last full-time manager — who was convicted last month of misusing the city-issued credit card for personal purchases.

“I’m very excited to be here,” said Adams, who most recently worked as city administrator in Medina. “I look forward to working with the community, the council and staff.”

He said he looks forward to being part of a new chapter in Albert Lea and strengthening relationships within the city.

Thus far, he said he’s had a chance to meet with many staff members and introduce himself to them. He’s had a staff meeting with department heads, along with some individual meetings with single department heads.

He said he’s had a tour of City Hall and within the next week hopes to take tours of the other city facilities and meet with the council members individually.

He has met with former Interim Albert Lea City Manager Pat McGarvey on three occasions and also with Mayor Vern Rasmussen.

Adams said he is waiting to hear back from the state about impacts on local government aid before delving too much into the budget.

Aside from work, Adams is married to his wife, Ann, and has three children, Alivia, 8, Grant, 5, and Will, 2.

His family is expected to come to town next week, after which time they will rent a condominium until they sell their home in Rockford.

When he’s not at work, Adams said he likes to read, watch movies and spend time with his family and friends.

He also enjoys playing basketball, tennis and riding his bike, along with participating in sprint triathlons. Next year he hopes to participate in the Land Between the Lakes Triathlon in Albert Lea.
