Editorial: Shaq is guilty of traveling

Some sports pundits say basketball player Shaquille O’Neal is the best player besides Michael Jordan in the post-Larry Bird-Magic Johnson era of the NBA, but, to us, his retirement announcement on Wednesday seems anti-climactic.
We think the reason is he wore so many uniforms.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld make a crack at modern sports, saying: “We’re just cheering for laundry!”
It’s one thing when a great player gets traded early in his career, whether it is John Elway or Babe Ruth, or when they do a short stint at the end, such as Joe Montana or Hakeem Olajuwon, but it a superstar that shops around seems less than a superstar.
Players find a team, become great, then fans stand behind that player.
If they go from team to team, the player seems more like a journeyman, those position specialists that teams pick up to fill a void.
Imagine if Twins great Kirby Puckett had played baseball for the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, Minnesota Twins and the San Diego Padres, yet had the same stats, clutch moments and titles. Would he be as revered? Of course not.
Shaq played for six teams: Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics.
At least Jordan spent the vast majority of his career with a single team, the Chicago Bulls.
Shaq was a great player. No doubt about that. But traveling — pun intended — diminishes his career.
