Update: Child on bike dies after crash with car

An 11-year-old child on a bicycle reportedly died Friday evening after a collision with a car at the intersection of Bridge Avenue and Marshall Street in Albert Lea.

The Albert Lea Police Department and Fire Rescue were dispatched at 5:13 p.m. to the crash, according to a press release.

When they arrived, Albert Lea police officers found the bicyclist, identified as Ayden Michael Brackey of Albert Lea, lying in the southbound lane of Bridge Avenue. The child was unresponsive, and officers began life-saving measures with the assistance of Albert Lea Fire and Rescue.

Brackey was taken by Mayo Ambulance to Mayo Clinic Hospital System in Albert Lea where he was declared deceased at 5:52 p.m., the release stated. 

Police said Brackey had been struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Viola Marian Matson, 89, of Albert Lea. Matson had been driving southbound on Bridge Avenue with a green light when the westbound bicycle crossed in front of her vehicle and was struck.

No impairment was detected and no criminal charges are being sought.
