One person has died and seven were injured in a crash Saturday night between a car and a school bus carrying the Waseca volleyball team on Interstate 90 south of Wells.

Mark Alan Tigner, 55, of Brandon, South Dakota, was reportedly driving a 2006 Ford Mustang and died at the scene, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities stated Tigner was traveling westbound on I-90 and a 2016 ICRP school bus was traveling eastbound when the vehicles collided near Highway 22 at about 8:42 p.m. Additional information about how the crash occurred has not yet been released.

The State Patrol indicates the driver of the bus, Charles Edward Cone, 79, of Waseca, and one other passenger, Kelsey Jo Kahnke, 24, of Waseca, were not injured. Kahnke is an assistant coach for the team.

Seven others on the bus, also from Waseca, were injured: Madelynn Leann Benzick, 14; Madison Leigh Corder-Broughten, 15; Makya Jo Donovan, 14; Avery Elaine Gaul, 14; Emily Myrna Mumme, 14; Kalea Jewel Sartori, 16; and Audriamma Lynn Willingham, 14.

The injured teenagers were all taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea for injuries deemed not life-threatening.

Waseca Public Schools issued the following statement on its Facebook page:

“Last evening, a school bus carrying our volleyball teams was involved in a collision with another vehicle as they traveled back from an away contest. While the State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident, we can confirm that no Waseca students or staff were seriously injured in the incident, and we are following up with students and families to support them through this event. Unfortunately, partial reports can result in misinformation being shared, so we wanted to give our school community the most accurate update we could without interrupting law enforcement’s work. Thank you for all of your thoughts and well wishes for our students and staff.”

The report stated alcohol was not a factor for Cone. It is unknown for Tigner.

Wells Ambulance, Wells Fire Department, Kiester Ambulance, Kiester Fire Department, Bricelyn Ambulance, Bricelyn Fire Department, Wells Police Department and Faribault County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
