The Albert Lea Tigers girls hockey team only plays one home game in the month of December, and that game took place on Tuesday evening at City Arena.
It was a battle of state-ranked Class A teams as the No. 13 Tigers took on No. 20-ranked Minnesota River. Albert Lea put on a dominant performance against a tough opponent, skating away with a 4-0 victory to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Shelby Evans drew first blood for the Tigers, scoring on a nice feed from Mika Cichosz midway through first period. The second period saw Albert Lea notch two unassisted goals as Haley Austinson scored from a tough angle near the goal line and Cichosz found the back of the net with a laser from the point to make it 3-0 for the Tigers.
The lone goal of the third period came on the power play for Albert Lea as the eighth-grader Austinson notched her second of the game on an assist from Olivia Ellsworth. Jayda Moyer posted the shutout for the Tigers, who will be in Mankato on Thursday evening to take on Mankato West. Game time is 7:15 p.m. at All Seasons Arena.
