Winning streak continues for Albert Lea girls’ hockey team

The Albert Lea Tigers girls hockey team rolled into Mankato on Thursday evening to take on the Mankato West Scarlets and came away with a 7-2 victory.
The Tigers fell behind 1-0 just two minutes into the first as Mankato West scored on the power play. Liley Steven answered quickly to tie the game on an assist from Olivia Ellsworth. Hanna Austinson converted a rebound off a shot from Aryah Hanson to make it a 2-1 game. Morgan Goskeson then scored off of a faceoff win by Shelby Evans before Mankato West made it 3-2 with another power play goal. Austinson capped the scoring in the 1st period with an assist from Anna Shaw.
A penalty-filled second period featured only a single, unassisted goal from Mika Cichosz less than a minute in, to make the game 5-2 in favor of Albert Lea. Both teams had multiple power play opportunities during the period but could not capitalize.
The third period saw the Tigers continue to dominate. Goskeson picked up her second goal of the game on an assist from Evans and Cichosz scored her second on an assist from Jordan Habana to make the final score 7-2 in favor of Albert Lea.
Rachel Doppelhammer picked up the win in goal for the Tigers.
Albert Lea is now off until next Saturday when they face #9AA Northfield in a matchup that will feature the top two teams in the Big 9 Conference. Game time will be 5 p.m. at the St. Olaf Arena.
