The Albert Lea High School girls hockey team welcomed Red Wing to Roy Nystrom Arena on Saturday evening for a Big 9 matchup between two longtime rivals. The Wingers braved the snow and cold only to witness a master performance by Albert Lea freshman Morgan Goskeson, who scored six goals to lead the Tigers to a 9-0 win on Teacher Appreciation Night.
Goskeson opened the scoring three minutes into an evenly played first period with an assist to Keira Erickson. Haley Austinson’s goal at the 10:31 mark of the first on an assist from Goskeson gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead that they would maintain through the end of the period.
The second period brought some fireworks from Albert Lea as Goskeson opened the scoring on an assist from Hanna Austinson just 24 seconds into the period. Two minutes later, Goskeson found the back of the net, again on an assist from Austinson to stretch the lead to 4-0. It was then Hanna Austinson’s turn to light the lamp, scoring a power play goal on an assist from Peyton Seeger, giving Albert Lea a 5-0 lead just 4:21 into the period.
The Tigers continued to swarm the Red Wing end of the ice for the next several minutes until Goskeson tallied an unassisted power play goal with just over seven minutes to play in the second period. Goskeson’s fifth goal of the game, again with an assist from Hanna Austinson, came at 14:35, while Mika Cichosz rounded out the scoring with a slapshot from just inside the blue line to register her 99th career point in a Tiger uniform.
The third period saw only one goal as Goskeson closed out her memorable night with a goal on yet another assist from Hanna Austinson.
Jayda Moyer was solid in the net for the Tigers, posting 16 saves for the shutout. Albert Lea next travels to Luverne for a matchup of state-ranked teams on Tuesday evening.
