Albert Lea girls’ hockey defeats Rochester Mayo, continues winning streak

The Albert Lea High School girls hockey team welcomed Rochester Mayo to town on Saturday evening for a Big 9 matchup. It was a special night for the Tigers as they celebrated Senior Night, honoring their 2024 senior class of Rachel Doppelhammer, Jordan Habana, Taylor Larsen and Zizi Willett. Albert Lea celebrated in style, skating away with a 6-1 victory at Roy Nystrom Arena.
The first period was all Albert Lea as Haley Austinson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 5:20 into the game. Morgan Goskeson scored a power play at the 11:08 mark on an assist from Hanna Austinson, and Haley Austinson tallied a short-handed goal with just over a minute left in the period on assists from her sister Hanna and Sydney Kolker to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Mayo was able to cut the lead down to two with a power play goal halfway through the second period period before a sensational individual effort from Goskeson resulted in another shorthanded Albert Lea goal and a 4-1 lead with five minutes remaining in the period. Goskeson completed her hat trick just over three minutes later on a goal assisted my Hanna Austinson and Peyton Seeger.
Shelby Evans scored the only goal of the third period for the Tigers on assists from Haley Austinson and Keira Erickson to finish off the 6-1 victory. Doppelhammer made 16 saves in net for Albert Lea, moving the team to 16-3 on the season.
The Tigers are in Mankato on Tuesday night to take on Mankato East at All Seasons Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
