3 advance to Class A state

Three area track and field athletes advanced to state meet Saturday at the Section 2AA championships at Mankato West High School.

Carlie Wagner, of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, advanced in the girls’ high jump after finishing second with a 5-foot-3-inch jump.

Wagner also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Tony Willette, of United South Central, advanced to the boys’ state meet after winning the discus throw event by more than eight feet.

Willette threw the discus 143 feet and 9 1/2 inches, while also finishing third in the shot put.

Hannah Goemann, of United South Central, advanced after finishing second in the 800-meter run in 2:19.09.

“With four competitors fighting it out down the final straightaway, she fought her way out of a box and put on a strong finishing kick to eke out the second-place spot,” USC coach Kent Viesselman said.

The Class A state track and field meet in Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
