Charles Claud Van Wey, peacefully passed away in his home, surrounded by his loving family on May 26, 2024. Born on July 21, 1938, in Frankville, IA, to Lester and Vivian (Letchford) Van Wey, Charles, known to many as Chuck, lived a life filled with love, kindness, and hope.

After graduating from Postville High School in 1957, Chuck entered the workforce and a few years later honorably served in the United States Army for five and a half years before returning home. His life took a beautiful turn when he met his soulmate, Sharon Hendrickson, and on January 7, 1967, they exchanged vows at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, IA.

Following their union Chuck and Shari lived in various places before settling down in Albert Lea; building a life together, raising their two sons, Scott and Brian, with love and dedication. After a brief stint at Queens in Albert Lea, he was asked to develop and teach a second year drafting program at Riverland College. His passion for education led him to return to school himself, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree at Mankato State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1979. He later took on a position as Administrator of Adult Education and retired in 1994.

Chuck’s influence extended beyond the classroom, with his role as a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church and was an active member of the church council. In his leisure time, Chuck found solace in nature, enjoying annual fishing trips to Canada with friends, hunting excursions, and camping adventures across various states with his family

Chuck’s positive outlook and determination shone brightly even in the face of adversity. Despite his battle with Leukemia for the past 30 years, his courageous spirit and unwavering hope inspired all those around him. His gentle nature and genuine kindness touched the lives of many, earning him the endearing nickname “Good Time Charlie” among his friends. He found joy in simple pleasures and cherished the moments spent with loved ones, and was fiercely proud of his role as husband, father, and grandfather. A lover of good company and friendly competition, Chuck enjoyed spending quality time with his card club, engaging in spirited games of 500 with friends. He made lasting connections with the Riverland staff and fellow members of the cancer support groups he held dear.

Chuck was a man who saw the good in everyone, always approaching life with a gentle heart and a ready smile. May his spirit continue to inspire kindness and compassion in the world as we bid farewell to a remarkable man.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Shari; sons, Scott (Jen) and Brian (Shannon); granddaughters, Catherine and Ava; sister, Jeanann (David) Schwinefus; brother-in-law, Edwin “Chip” (Kris) Hendrickson; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, special aunt, Virgen Sanderson; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Phelps.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota; Pastor Shane Koepke will officiate. Chuck’s family will greet guests at a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be presented by the Freeborn County Honor Guard. Interment will be at a later date.
