Angie Hanson’s letter in the June 1 edition of the Tribune nudged me hard enough that I had to respond. I don’t live in Albert Lea, but I shop there, eat there, have many friends in your community and have enjoyed the Wedgewood Cove restaurant numerous times. So the “alphabet” brunch was canceled at that restaurant because the owners did not feel it was a suitable event for their facility. I agree that the cancellation time was too short; I’m assuming the venue knew what the brunch was to be when it was originally booked. But, the entire thing reminded me that I’m still waiting for the Straight Pride events to take place. When do WE march, have a pretty colored logo, and see clothing in the big box stores that declare “I’m Straight, Ain’t That Great!”?

When can we have a brunch or a library story hour where people in clothes that match their birth gender read books to little children about heterosexual families and friends?

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not homophobic. All people have a perfect right to choose their own path in this life. Whether it resonates with me is of no concern to anyone but me. What I want is the equality that is being passed out so freely. How about a big parade of straight people as an annual event (just for OUR month, not celebrating a holiday) and that we have four weeks all to ourselves to celebrate our straight relationships and activities? I don’t think it’s too much to ask.
