Darrell S. Folie, age 80, died Friday, June 21 surrounded by family at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, MN. He was born August 24, 1943, to Sherman and Ada Folie in Freeborn County, MN. Darrell was raised in Clarks Grove, MN and graduated from Albert Lea High School. He then went onto Austin Junior College before completing a finance degree from Mankato State. In 1966 Darrell joined the Minnesota National Guard and started his career as an internal auditor with 3M. He remained with 3M in various financial positions for 35 years until his retirement.
In 1972, Darrell met Cynthia Hartman of Costa Mesa, CA. They united in marriage on Dec. 8, 1973, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN. They lived in Stillwater, MN where they welcomed two children, Darrin and Deana. They moved to Wisconsin a few years later so Darrell could farm.
Once retired, Darrell started restoring Oliver tractors, which were the tractors his father farmed with. The hobby grew into a second career and along with his son Darrin, additional Oliver and Cockshutt tractors were collected and painstakingly restored. The restored tractors have been featured in numerous magazines and calendars. Darrell was a member of both Northland Oliver and Go-pher Cockshutt clubs.
Darrell’s greatest joy was his raising his children, helping them to grow and become independent. He was their ready resource for all things electrical, plumbing, mechanical, financial and wood working projects. Darrell also loved to trade “bad dad jokes” and winter weather reports with Deana.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cynthia, son Darrin, daughter, Deana, sisters-in-law Cecelia Hartman, Corinne Hartman, and Judy Folie, nephew Danny Folie, niece Angela Folie, and numerous friends. Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Ada Folie, brothers Vernon and Kenneth Folie, and brother-in-law David Hartman.
