“He’s Just Not That Into You” isn’t your typical chick flick. This film has its sappy moments, but it also allows women to learn life lessons through a variety of relationship situations.

Based upon Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo’s bestselling book by the same title, the movie takes their relationship advice a few steps further. Viewers can follow the lives of a group of twenty and thirty somethings residing in Baltimore.

One of the leading ladies is Gigi, who always over-analyzes every detail of her personal life. “Why didn’t he call me? Does he really like me?” Her luck changes when she meets an extremely frank bartender, Alex, played by Justin Long. He becomes her go-to for all relationship advice.

Eventually Gigi starts reading into Alex’s signals and believes that he is “into” her. But is she interpreting “the signs” correctly? Her ditsiness is a little annoying, but she’s very lovable and is sure to captivate viewers. Every facial expression, word and action is believable because of the actress Ginnifer Goodwin’s seamless performance.

Listening to Alex’s advice allows viewers to learn vicariously through her. If a guy is really “into” you, he will call. If he doesn’t call, it’s time to move on. He’s very blunt in giving his advice, providing means for an epiphany or a friendly reminder.

The star-studded cast also includes Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck. They play Beth and Neil who have been in a relationship for seven years. Beth desperately wants to get married – but Neil doesn’t believe in marriage. He makes it clear that he doesn’t need a piece of paper to validate their relationship. This raises the question, how far will he go to show how much he is “into” Beth?

Another A-list couple, Scarlett Johansson and Bradley Cooper, play major roles in the movie, Anna and Ben. Their story begins at a cash register in a grocery store. Winning a cooler proves life altering when Anna hugs the stranger next to her, Ben. They feel an immediate attraction. She’s a singer and he’s an agent who represents singers, a perfect match. But he’s married.

As the other woman, Johansson’s stellar performance shows women that it’s never a good idea to get involved with a married man. Their situation gets even more dramatic with indications that Ben’s marriage in trouble.

The climax comes when his wife Janine arrives at his office just as Anna and Ben are becoming quite intensely engaged. Anna hides in the closet, half-dressed, hearing Janine do her utmost to save their marriage. Ben has two options, Janine or Anna. Maybe Ben’s not really “into” Anna after all.

The constant jumps into different characters’ lives are a little confusing. However, their worlds intertwine in this soap opera land, which develops its characters and adds plot twists at a pleasant pace. The famous cast also adds to its appeal; Kevin Connolly, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Connelly also star.

The majority of the scenes are set in everyday locations. Its honesty is also enriched by the actors chosen to introduce new sections in the movie. Hilarious chapter openings feature random people spouting off about their life difficulties.

“He’s Just Not That Into You” will guarantee some light-bulb moments, laughs and maybe a few tears. The sappy moments can be overlooked as it shines light into the shadowy male mind. Alex’s advice may be redundant for some, but this film is an entertaining way to be reminded that he just may not be “into” you.
