Children returned to school in the Albert Lea school district today, and that means there will inevitably be children walking to and from their homes to school or the bus stop and children out waiting for the bus.
We remind motorists to use extra caution as you drive the streets in the community, especially in residential areas before and after school, when the children will be out.
Often children don’t think with safety at the top of mind, so it is critical for motorists to stay alert and aware of what is happening around them.
This is also a good time to remind of school bus stop arms and the importance of following the laws related to them for the safety of our community’s children.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights and/or its stop arm is extended when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads.
Red flashing lights on buses indicate students are either entering or exiting the bus.
The Department of Public Safety states motorists are not required to stop for a bus if the bus is on the opposite side of a separated roadway, but they should always remain alert for children.
To avoid a bus, motorists can alter their route or schedule to avoid potentially putting children at risk.
Motorists should also watch for school crossing patrols and pedestrians and reduce speeds in and around school zones.
Help keep our next generation safe, and make it a priority to slow down on the roads and keep alert while behind the wheel.
