2 injured after car hits deer on I-35 north of Albert Lea

Two people were injured early Tuesday morning after their vehicle reportedly struck a deer on Interstate 35 north of Albert Lea.

Oscar Joaquin Pastrana, 49, of St. Paul and Charles N. Hawes, 56, of Bronx, New York, were taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea for injuries deemed not life-threatening, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash report stated Pastrana was the driver of the 2024 Toyota Camry that the two men were riding in and that the vehicle was southbound on I-35 at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday when it struck a deer near milepost 16.

Both men were wearing their seatbelts, and alcohol was not a factor.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and Mayo Clinic Ambulance assisted at the scene.
