A young child was found wandering around the streets Sunday night in Albert Lea near the corner of Front Street and Newton Avenue.

Starting at about 10:10 p.m., police attempted to walk and then drive around with the young boy for at least an hour to help him find his home.

After not having any success, the boy was turned over to Child Protective Services, according to police.

The child, who was wearing pajamas, reportedly did not know where he lived.

The search included the streets of Pearl Street and Elizabeth Avenue and then east on Main Street near Hanson Tire Service and the Albert Lea Car Wash. Police also looked in the neighborhood near the post office around Newton Avenue.

Albert Lea Police Chief Dwaine Winkels said during the entire search, dispatchers had not received a single call about a missing child; however, after the boy was already in custody — sometime after 11:30 p.m. — an officer spotted a woman near East College who appeared to be looking for someone.

When approached, she said she was looking for her young son.

The woman, whose name has not been released, said she had put the boy to bed at about 9:30 p.m. and she was not sure how long he had been out walking around.

Albert Lea Police Chief Dwaine Winkels said the Department of Human Services will review the case and make a recommendation about how to proceed.
