This week’s homecoming festivities in Albert Lea have me thinking about my own homecoming when I was in high school.
I don’t remember having nearly as many activities as what the Albert Lea school district has planned this week, and I’m a little jealous by the fun memories that will be created.
I remember attending a powder puff football game, and the regular football game on Friday night, followed by the big dance on Saturday night.
It was almost like a second prom where couples and groups dressed up and went out to dinner before going to some offsite location for the big dance.
I still remember the dress I wore and getting my hair done that day and the fun that I had with my date and friends.
I’m happy to see the opportunities that our students here in Albert Lea have to do those same things — and then some — with the parade on Wednesday, the coronation on Thursday and the football games. New this year is the Tiger Spirit Festival that will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the north high school parking lot. There will be carnival games, door prizes and school and community information.
I like that homecoming in Albert Lea is more inclusive of the whole community and not just for the students, in that it encourages the community to participate in events as well.
It’s also a time to support our youth in their activities and to show them that we care about them.
If you’ve never gone to the homecoming parade or gone to a homecoming football game as an adult, I hope you will get out this week and join in the fun.
It’s an opportunity to foster school spirit in your young and older children alike, and for people to remember their years gone by when they were in high school taking part in the same activities.
Even if you don’t have any children in the school district, you’re still invited.
Get out there and show your Tiger pride!
