Administrator’s Corner by Jennifer Walsh
On Monday night the school board approved the 24 Pay 25 school district portion of property taxes. The proposed levy is a 2.44% decrease from last year. The funds will be revenue for the district in fiscal year 25-26. Projected enrollment and a decrease to the lease portion of the levy are two of the primary reasons for the reduction.
The district successfully addressed several large-scale projects over the summer, ensuring that schools were well-prepared for the new academic year. Among the most notable improvements was the installation of new classroom furniture at each of the elementary schools, providing the ability to create flexible learning spaces. This initiative was funded by federal dollars that we received during the pandemic. Those funds expired on Sept. 30.
Additionally, new boilers were installed at both Southwest Middle School and Lakeview Elementary School. This is a significant upgrade that aligns with the district’s goal for sustainability and reduced energy costs.
Maintenance work also included the replacement of another section of the high school roof, a necessary investment to prevent leaks and ensure the integrity of the building. This project is part of an ongoing effort to maintain and upgrade school facilities, reflecting the district’s commitment to providing a safe and functional environment for both students and staff.
With my impending retirement later this fall, I am delighted that the district has named Paul Durbahn as my successor. Paul brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, having served as a teacher, activities director, and most recently, as assistant director of finance and operations. His deep understanding of our schools and commitment to our community position him perfectly to lead our financial strategies and operational initiatives.
Jennifer is the director of finance and operations for Albert Lea Area Schools.
