On Thursday morning 250 sixth-grade students from Southwest Middle School toured two of Albert Lea’s manufacturers: Lou-Rich Manufacturing and Design Ready Controls. This experience gave the young learners a firsthand look at different career scenarios within manufacturing.
Lou-Rich Manufacturing, a company known for creating complex parts and systems for industries such as agriculture, health care and defense, welcomed the students to observe their production lines in action. Across town, Design Ready Controls provided insight into their production of custom electrical control panels, essential for various sectors including HVAC and renewable energy.
The tours, part of the Youth Skills Training (YST) program grant, are designed to boost student exposure to high-demand careers.
“These tours not only allow our students to explore career options early but also help us lay the groundwork to keep our skilled graduates local,” said field trip organizer Jeff Halverson. “Building these connections before high school gives our students a chance to see real career pathways and make lasting connections with our area’s industries.”
With programs like Youth Skills Training, Albert Lea Area Schools hopes to inspire the next generation of skilled workers, strengthening both student opportunities and the local workforce.
