The Salvation Army emergency disaster teams will be opening two cooling stations today with the intent of helping to combat the heat.

With heat indices exceeding the 100-degree mark for the second day, the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services has felt compelled to open two cooling stations in Albert Lea. The hope and intentions are to provide some relief for area residents.

The cooling stations will be located at Morin Park on the corner of Main and Washington streets, Albert Lea, and behind The Salvation Army headquarters on 300 College St. The cooling stations will continue to be open until the heat index drops below the “danger” level.
Morin Park will host for the first time the mobile cooling trailer built to provide a portable comfort and cooling station for area fire departments during emergencies. Today, local residents who need to get some relief from the heat can utilize this cooling trailer. Albert Lea’s Salvation Army officer/administrator Capt. Jim Brickson said, “These cooling centers will give our disaster workers an opportunity to put in use this trailer and complete necessary training for our members. But this is ultimately really about our
community and keeping them safe and cool.”
