An Albert Lea man reportedly suffered a medical episode Tuesday afternoon that led to him crashing into a telephone pole and then ending up on the ice on Fountain Lake’s Edgewater Bay.

Police stated Kenneth Ayers, 89, was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup north on 733rd Avenue at 3:18 p.m. when he struck the telephone pole at the northeast corner of the road’s intersection with Edgewater Drive, turned toward the lake, took out a dock marker and then went out onto the ice, coming to rest on rocks on the side of the lake.

It was unclear if he was attempting to turn or if he went off the road when he initially hit the pole.

Ayers was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea by Mayo Ambulance.
