Joan Boyenga’s class at Hawthorne Elementary School has been working and having a lot of fun in first grade. They have been learning how to decode big words with two to three syllables. First graders love to write these words on white boards and then read them. They have been practicing writing an informative paragraph about fables they have been reading about. They have a topic sentence, details to support the topic and a conclusion about the topic. When writing, students are also working on letter formation, capitalization, punctuation and writing a complete sentence. In math, first graders are learning about place value, making 10’s, finding patterns on a hundred chart and counting by 1’s and 10’s from any given number up to 120. Provided
