Most dangerous wind chills coming tonight, Tuesday morning

The bitter cold continues through Tuesday morning with the Albert Lea area under a cold weather advisory and some of the surrounding counties in an extreme cold warning.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest and most widespread impacts will be over the next 24 hours as wind chills of 30 to 40 degrees below zero persist.

The Weather Agency warns the most dangerous wind chills could come between 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday, when frostbite can occur on exposed skin within minutes.

Mower County, along  with Worth and Winnebago counties in Iowa, are under an extreme cold warning, while Freeborn, Faribault, Waseca and Steele counties are in a cold weather advisory.

People should stay indoors if possible, bring pets indoors and keep flammables 3 feet from space heaters. If people have to go outdoors, they should keep jumper cables and an emergency kit in their car and remember that frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes on exposed skin.
