The three young adults who together face more than 90 charges related to alleged car break-ins in Alden made their initial appearance in Freeborn County District Court Tuesday in front of Judge Steve Schwab.
The majority of the time for the defendants was spent with their lawyers and Schwab discussing bails and release conditions, along with the hearings that will come next.
The three defendants, Jeremy Brian Rietsema, 21, Katharine Rose Aldrich, 20, and Brittny Michelle Billings, 18, appeared separately. Rietsema and Aldrich were still in custody, while Billings appeared with her family. She had posted $5,000 bail.
Each face seven counts of third-degree burglary, seven counts of aiding and abetting third-degree burglary, seven counts of misdemeanor theft, seven counts of misdemeanor aiding and abetting theft, and three counts of motor vehicle tampering stemming from incidents the end of January. The third-degree burglary charges and aiding and abetting third-degree burglary charges are felonies.
The young adults were arrested after Alden Police Chief Chris Harpham was called Jan. 31 to investigate after someone stole a pair of gloves from inside a parked car.
Harpham noticed three distinct sets of prints around the car and followed the prints to another vehicle, which had also been burglarized. He followed the trail for five hours and found 17 vehicles that had appeared to have been broken into.
Rietsema’s bail requirements and conditions of release did not change after his appearance Tuesday. His bail requirements are set at $20,000 without conditions and $5,000 with conditions.
The bail requirements and conditions of release for Billings also did not change after her appearance Tuesday. Because she already posted bail, she must continue to follow the same release conditions.
Rietsema and Billings next will appear for a default omnibus hearing.
Aldrich was the only suspect whose bail requirements and conditions of release changed. While her original bail was set at $20,000 without conditions and 10,000 with conditions, her bail on Tuesday changed to $15,000 without conditions and $5,000 with conditions. She will next appear for a contested omnibus hearing.
The court dates have not been set.
