Tigers fade in second half

Albert Lea boys’ basketball team head coach Chad Feikema had thought the Tigers had taken a step forward after Friday’s 76-60 loss to Rochester Century and it appeared as though the team had rolled some of that momentum into Tuesday’s game with Faribault.
That momentum, however, did not last two halves Tuesday as Albert Lea fell 70-42 to the Falcons in Albert Lea.
“The second half was truly disappointing after I was so proud of them Friday,” Feikema said.
The Tigers (0-6, 1-11) played a solid first half and trailed 29-22 at the break.
The game wouldn’t get any closer for Albert Lea as Faribault got off to a quick start in the second half. The Falcons (9-4, 3-3) used a 12-2 run to open the second half to build a 41-24 lead six minutes in.
“At halftime we had a chance to win,” Feikema said. “I was just really disappointed with our effort. I felt like we rolled over and that we played like we really didn’t want to win.”
It was a significant change from Friday’s game for Feikema.
“I was really proud of how we played on Friday night,” Feikema said. “We just fought tooth and nail Friday night.
“The second half tonight we came out and rolled over. We didn’t cut hard, we didn’t sprint, we didn’t fight through screens, we didn’t communicate on defense … I just felt like we didn’t want to win.”
The Tigers weren’t able to find much offense in the second half, going five minutes without a field goal as Faribault opened up a 57-33 lead with 6 minutes, 25 seconds left in the game.
The Falcons shot 51 percent from the field while Albert Lea was held to 36 percent.
While Feikema was pleased with his team’s performance in the first half, he was not happy with how the offense looked in the second half.
“I don’t feel like we cut with the intention of wanting the ball,” he said. “Sometimes I think some of our guys go through the motions and don’t cut with the idea of ‘I want the ball.’ That’s something that I don’t know that it can be taught. Sometimes you gotta have guys that want and demand the ball.”
Faribault got some good looks down low with its dribble penetration and positioning inside.
“They beat us to spots,” Feikema said. “We did not do a good job of denying them passing lanes. That comes back to concentration and effort.”
Sean Templeman led the Tigers with eight points and Colton Zuniga had seven points off the bench in the loss.
Andy Hein led the Falcons with 11 and Evan Knutson had 10 points.
“The biggest issue is we need consistent effort from all of our guys,” Feikema said. “You can’t have one or two guys playing hard, we need consistent effort from all of our guys.”
Albert Lea faces John Marshall Friday in Albert Lea.
