At home or away the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team seems to get it done.
Whether it is in regulation, overtime or double overtime they are putting up wins and the last one was against No. 6-ranked Hayfield (8-2) where their 46-42 win came in yet another overtime — the second in three games.
NRHEG (10-0 ), ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, brought another quick floor game to Hayfield with its guards pushing the ball up the court and finding one of its many forwards who took control from there.
The Panthers had a 24-17 lead going into halftime but the Vikings didn’t give up.
Hayfield came out and found some 3-point shots, making six in the game. The free throw shooting of both teams was good, but Hayfield went 6-for-7, which kept the Panthers on their toes.
“It was a dog fight,” said NRHEG head coach Mindy Sparby. “I am really proud of the girls’ effort again tonight. Everybody worked for everything they got.”
Sophomore Alyssa Kerkhoff was the leading scorer for the Panthers again as she scored 17 points while Kristina Cole added 14.
Hayfield not only played a close game score-wise, but created a lot of pressure on NRHEG. That pressure turned into many foul shots for the Panthers.
NRHEG capitalized on the fouls by going to the line 28 times in the game and making 18 of them.
“The team really stayed positive throughout the whole game,” Sparby said. “They always give it their best effort. They deserve these wins.”
The Panthers’ schedule doesn’t let up as next Tuesday they will be at home playing a Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (9-2) team that has been playing some red-hot ball this season.
