The Albert Lea wrestling team powered its way past Austin Thursday night in Austin with a resounding 59-8 victory.
The No. 3-ranked Tigers (11-6, 2-0) had 48-0 lead against the Packers before Austin tallied its first points of the dual.
Through the first nine weights Albert Lea accumulated six falls and a technical fall.
The Tigers were in control from the early stages as Trey Hable, Cory Hansen and Dalton Westerlund all pinned their opponents. Adam Clark followed with a technical fall and Cody Hansen, the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 125, pinned Lucas Akkerman at 4 minutes, 26 seconds.
Conner and Carter Kortan each picked wins by fall in their matches. No. 6 ranked Matt Tiegs also added a win by fall to make it a total of seven victories by fall.
The fast starts for Albert Lea have been important for the team.
“That’s a good thing to have,” said Tigers head coach Larry Goodnature. “It gets the momentum going for us.”
Goodnature was pleased with the efforts of the wrestlers in the lower weights, especially the Kortans, Trevor Rasmussen, Adam Kermes, Trey Hable, and Adam Clark.
“We were aggressive again going after the falls and bonus points,” Goodnature said.
Albert Lea hosts Dover-Eyota and Northfield next Thursday in Albert Lea before traveling to St. Cloud for the Kiffmeyer Duals. The field will include No. 2 ranked in Class 3A Hastings, No. 3 ranked in Class 2A Foley and No. 6-ranked St. Michael-Albertville.
