It was a game of streaks Monday night for the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team.

At the end, it was Owatonna streaking off the court with the 54-42 win.

Abbey Arends and Morgan Stadheim led the Tigers with 13 points apiece to pace Albert Lea, which fell to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big Nine.

Owatonna’s 6-foot-4 sophomore Trisha Benjamin led the Huskies attack with 15 points and seven rebounds — four of them on the offensive glass.

Albert Lea coach Sean Gillam was pleased with his players’ performance against a strong inside presence.

“I thought some of our post players played really hard tonight,” he said. “But then we kind of ran out of steam.”

The teams combined to shoot 12-of-59 from the field in the first half. For the game, Albert Lea shot 25 percent while Owatonna managed 36 percent. The Huskies made only 12-of-28 free throws while the Tigers made 10-of-12.

The Huskies outrebounded the home team 49-41.

Albert Lea’s 15 turnovers were one fewer than Owatonna’s total, but the Tigers’ fouled 22 times compared to the Huskies’ 11.

The Tigers took a 15-9 lead midway through the first half and threatened to open up a sizable lead on Owatonna, which kept its perfect Big Nine record intact at 5-0. The Huskies are 5-6 overall.

Owatonna rattled off seven straight points and the teams wound up knotted at 18 after 18 minutes.

The Huskies kept the momentum out of the break, scoring the first nine points of the second half to take a 27-18 lead thanks to some quick baskets off a press that created some trouble for the Tigers.

In danger of falling behind by double digits, Arends sparked the Tigers by scoring the game’s next six points. Another field goal capped an 8-0 Albert Lea run, but the Tigers failed to take the lead on their next possession.

Arends was then flagged for two quick fouls. The Tigers never rebounded from that point and watched the Huskies steadily pull away throughout the last 12 minutes.

Albert Lea returns to the court on Friday at Faribault.
